BEYOND BORDERS
Originally from Somalia, Nafisa came to Australia in 2010, fleeing ongoing civil war. At 21, she fell pregnant in circumstances that left her estranged from most of her family and community. Before and after her son’s birth, Nafisa was supported by Elizabeth, a volunteer doula with Birth for HumanKIND, an organisation that assists pregnant women experiencing socio-economic disadvantage, including refugees. The women developed a strong bond, with Elizabeth helping Nafisa to navigate the Australian maternal health system and develop confidence as a new mother.
